Why Won’t Fish Be Our Valentine?

We started this wonderful sunny day with heart shape pancakes and then we lifted anchor and motored on this windless day to Table Island. This destination is exposed to theopen Gulf of Alaska to the east and northeast, but winds are out of the northwest so we are fairly comfortable making this spot our anchorage for the night, even though it is unmentioned in any of our references. The winds remain fairly calm and even though it is exposed, there is not much of a roll this evening. We were so happy and excited to fish in this spot, for not only was it recommended by a new friend in Old Harbor, it seemed the perfect place to “catch” based on our Alaska knowledge of . . . well . . . more fishing than catching lately, ha. The area is a rocky peninsula with kelp everywhere, and seemed to possess the attributes of a good fish catching spot, but alas today, Valentines Day, a day for which we hoped good fortune would smile upon us in these seemingly wonderful conditions, was a day of fishing in beautiful winter weather and scenery. For hours we tried catching King Salmon and Rockfish with different lures and different depths, but the fish it appear were not as excited as us. Tomorrow we head to Kodiak town for what we hope is a short layover. We caught fish in Seal Bay a year ago, and it may seem silly to traverse that far for fishing, but if that is what it takes … To provide an additional reason to sail 50 miles north of Kodiak City, we consider sailing beyond Seal Bay, to Seldovia and Homer next week if the winds should cooperate.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Cheers,
Wade and Sara
