T-shirt Weather Sailing Again

By 9:00 am we had both traps on deck and headed west to explore more of the Aleutian Chain. We caught two shrimp, but all our crabs were eaten by one octopus. This invading octopus is now in our freezer for to be later eaten by us. As we rounded Cape cheerful we had a rising tide so current was against us and our speed was around 4.3 knots. The day has been a gorgeous sunny day. Our cockpit temperature is 69 degrees, perfect t-shirt sailing weather.

After passing Cape Cheerful we came upon the Makushin Glacier and Volcano where powerful waterfalls poured into valleys, then into the ocean. On the mountain there was a blue hue about the snow and jagged rocky peaks from the volcano.

After we were clear from Makushin the wind came up and we finally got to sail. The wind has been on the beam between 22 to 26 knots and we were flying along averaging 7 knots. The wind is primarily out of the south allowing us to sail west, with a heading 3 miles south of Bogoslof Volcano. If you remember upon our Alaska arrival in 2017, Bogoslof was very active and spitting ash. We’ve heard that it has settled down and there is a research camp located on the beach, so we’re thinking it will be okay to sail fairly close. As we approach it we can see what looks like steam from the volcano and nearby ocean, but we are not close enough to be sure.

Right now our course looks like we are headed for Russia, which is still nearly 800 miles away, but really our goal is to make landfall on the island called Atka within the next couple of days, which is 300 miles away.

Cheers,
Wade and Sara
