Today we motored in calm winds to Bluefox Bay, not to be confused with Kodiak’s Bluefox Bay on Afognak Island, we are still exploring Atka Island. We were hoping to motor close to shore so we could scout out other bays and to search for Caribou; however, we woke to heavy fog. The fog was so thick we could not see land 300 feet away, so during our transit we stayed further offshore to possibly avoid uncharted rocks.
Once anchored we went to shore, this time prepared to hunt, but these Caribou are spooked easily. Just the sight of our boat we watched them run deeper into the hillside. As we pulled up to shore there was a cute seal popping his head up and down to see what we were doing. We walked a mile or so into the valley, climbed over hills, to look down the other side to no avail. So far the hiking is wonderfully easy. We’re both hiking in our Xtra Tuff boots because the ground is so boggy and we walked through several river streams.
After our hike Sara pushed the dinghy away from shore and accidentally soaked her right leg up to her knee in the water; which put her out of hiking commission for the day. We are expecting two strong low pressure systems in the next couple of days so Wade went off to check out surrounding bays.
Just as Sara had finished baking a red salmon filet, she heard a knock on the side of the boat, it was Wade returning with a nice size Caribou. We are now busy with peeling, fleshing, and processing so Wade will write more about this story later. 🙂
Cheers,
Wade and Sara
