We had a busy morning but beautiful morning. The sun rose from Tahiti Iti and shined on Tahiti Nui as we moved the boat to Phaeton Bay; which is rumored to be the best hurricane whole in the south pacific. There are many mooring balls so we were very careful where we anchored. We dropped the dinghy and headed for shore to exchange money and boy did we learn the hard way. Unless you have a French bank account or exchange $400 increments in Pape’ete you will not exchange US currency for any French Polynesian currency.
The most fun part of today was walking across the island from shore to shore. Phaeton Bay and Taravao village divide Tahiti Nui and Tahiti Iti so as we searched for shopping centers and banks we literally walked across the island.
We were a little tired on our way back to the boat, but Wade stopped at a corn stand to buy corn. Of course Sara had to take a picture of a corn farmer buying corn in Tahiti and the stand owner was so nice he gave us four times the amount of corn we paid for, plus a bag of limes. Tomorrow’s new adventure might be canning corn.
Cruiser Tip: Be extremely careful navigating through the lagoon and passages around Tahiti. The island markers look exactly the same as channel markers, but passing on the wrong side could be devastating to your boat.
Cheers!
