Moo-ville

Or perhaps instead this blog post could be entitled Moo-burg (like hamburger) or Moo Town, Cow Town, well you may be getting the idea that there are cows around our anchorage this evening. Yes, we have struck beef, not gold, in this anchorage outside an abandoned gold mining town that used to have 6,000 people at one time. All that seems to remain are falling down buildings and cows. Black cows, red cows, white cows, brown cows, big cows, little cows, cows everywhere. So many cows that we were told by numerous people that we are welcome to shoot one of these wild cows if we like. Yet from a distance they look anything but wild, instead friendly like you could pet them as they graze around abandoned houses. So we are not sure we want to hunt cow, however, we heard from a friend that they were charged by a bull on a different cow inhabited island, albeit after shooting one of the heard. So maybe we will take a gun to shore tomorrow as we explore the village even though taking a gun to shore is normally for bear defense rather than cow defense. By the way, there are no bears on this island called Unga.

As for the rest of our day, we filled our water tanks, went to the fuel dock, left Sand Point, and checked out a gold mining spot along shore but the conditions were not good for anchoring there. Yesterday we caught 4 legal dungeness crab and the one uneaten crab Sara used this morning to make Crab Eggs Benedict for breakfast – Yummy. Later Sara bake some Jam Bars (double yummy) and she also made fish chowder for supper. In our crab trap today we caught one lonely crab so that went in the “chowder” pot as well. Our GCI phone service expires tonight at midnight, which really didn’t matter because sadly the data reception was very poor in Sand Point. Presently we are entirely without reception and expect to be so until we reach Kodiak town.

Cheers,
Wade and Sara
