Leif’s Maiden Voyage

We could choose from so many different titles; Welcome Leif, New to the Crew, Shake Down Long Island, We’re Back to Blogging, Eight Years in the Making. . . the list could go on.

Eight years ago, Wade and Sara met the old-fashioned way at the Harbor Pub. Leaving the Harbor Pub, they walked to their respective boats in the Ala Wai, and Sara asked Wade, “How do you feel about children?” Wade returned with a question, “How do you feel about babies on boats?” Sara responded, “Sounds Fun!” Each prequalified the other, and the rest is history.

Leif has adjusted to boat life as well as he did the camper. The scenery might be different, but mom and dad are around, and he is loved.

However, the most significant adjustment has been Wade and Sara getting ready. Everything takes five times longer. One of us is always watching the baby. For example, Sara is writing this blog post while Wade cooks our freshly caught rockfish with Leif in the baby carrier.

Yesterday we left the dock for the first time with Leif. We headed to the fuel dock and filled 79 gallons of diesel. We have been bummed about prices because in town, the cost is $6.55; however, marine fuel is discounted to a little over $5.

Today we left the dock for Long Island around noon. The weather was a gorgeous 70 degrees, sunny and just perfect. The winds had been from the west for a few days, so we had to motor into the slight swell. After we got anchored, Leif was ready for a nap. Wade got all the fishing gear ready, and we went fishing after Leif woke, he even caught his first Rockfish.

We’ve got a few things to test before we get underway this summer. Right now, the goal is Dutch Harbor, but we’re open to where the wind blows.

Cheers,
Wade, Sara, and Leif
