Kodiak Silhouette

Yesterday morning had a crisp chill in the air and the temperature in the morning was around 40 degrees. We haven’t harvested the garden yet, so we were a little worried about the plants wilting. As the sun came up it warmed the cockpit to 80 degrees. In the cockpit we played card games, nautical trivia, cribbage, and looked outside for bears. The winds were supposed to be around 9 knots from the west, but there was a williwaw to 30 knots. So we just hung out on the boat and enjoyed the sunshine. The bears stayed hidden during the day, but around sunset we saw two bears walking around the beach. The bear downwind of our boat came to the waters edge and continually sniffed the air, he might have smelled the duck and wild rice we were baking.

Today we awoke to calms winds and we caught up on some chores. We filled the fuel tank from jerry cans and fixed our port navigation light. We lowered the dinghy before leaving and cruised up and down the shores. We did go to shore to walk around a little bit, but we didn’t set our bear anchor keeping the dinghy off shore so we stayed close to the dinghy. Ya know just in case a bear wanted a chew toy.

We moved to Missak Bay to prepare for our sail to Kodiak. Tomorrow the winds are supposed to be out of 210° at about 25 knots, which from our current anchorage will put the wind directly on our beam. While leaving Hidden Harbor we could tell the wind speed started to pick up. We were a little concerned our new anchorage would be a bit uncomfortable because of swell, and it is. The swell from the south west wraps around the point and our bow is pointed south west causing the boat to be beam to the swell and making the boat roll back and forth. Once the anchor was down in Missak Bay we looked off across the Shelikof Straight and saw the mountain silhouette of Kodiak.

Cheers,
Sara and Wade
