We woke to a beautiful sunny day, light east winds, and calm seas. We headed to Korovin Bay to fish for halibut, but instead caught the mother load of pacific cod. We could hardly get our lure to the seafloor and had two hooked. The average size was around 20 lbs and the longest was 37 inches. What a day! Both of us were in t-shirts on the foredeck just reeling in the fish. The fishing was so intense we had only one pole in the water and had to take turns reeling them on deck because the fight was so fun.
We first had decided to anchor in Martin Harbor, as the US Coast Pilot 9, state it is a great all weather anchorage, but as we approached the anchorage we were enveloped in a fog, but could see the sun still shining on the eastern mountains. Martin Harbor seemed like an excellent and calm anchorage but we wanted the sun, so we moved to Korovin Bay. Along the way we noticed the seafloor was mud and the right depth for crab, so with all of this bate we had after fileting the lingcod we dropped all traps in the water on our way to the anchorage. Crossing fingers crab is on the menu tomorrow.
Just as we were anchored Wade noticed a four wheeler on shore buzzing the beach. On the opposite side of this bay is Nazan Bay home of the only village on Atka. We were thinking of having a BBQ on the beach, but it’s late for tonight and we’re exhausted.
Cheers,
Wade and Sara
