We made it across the Shelikof Straight and we have not stopped motoring along the shores of the Alaska Peninsula. We have thought about stopping, but in 24 hours the winds are forecasted to change and will not be in our favor to move west. During these calm almost glassy waters we have decided to motor ahead to hopefully make landfall on Popof Island around noon tomorrow.
Last night we resumed our normal night watch schedule, but Sara couldn’t fall asleep at 7 pm, instead she went to bed at 8 pm, and Wade was so kind to wake her for her watch around 3 am. He went to sleep for around 5 and half hours when Sara had to wake him. We were were passing through a channel that had her a bit spooked. The US Coast Pilot 9 indicated that if the wind and current were opposing then large waves could engulf the narrow channel between Sutwik Island and the Peninsula, so she woke poor sleepy Wade for an all hands on deck uneventful pass through the islands.
This evening we ate our taco dinner while passing by a castle in the sky. As stated in the US Coast Pilot 9, “The south side of Castle Cape is narrow and precipitous; stratification is a conspicuous feature of many shades of light-colored rocks varied by bands of black. The cape has been worn into many curious castellated pinnacles and buttresses”.
It’s amazing that throughout this entire day we have not seen any people, boats, nor nets. But kelp is plentiful and otters occasional.
Cheers,
Wade and Sara
