Are we in the tropics?

Yesterday we spent anchored in English Bay. We enjoyed beautiful sunny and warm weather with a light breeze. If felt like 65 to 70 degrees outside. We went dinghy fishing for more halibut so we could have two poles in the water, but Wade was the only one to catch one last halibut.

After fishing we took a walk on the beach and viewed a salmon graveyard. As Unalaska Island has no bears only bald eagles and sea gulls threaten the last remaining humpy salmon trying to make their way up the stream. As the sun started to get low we sat on the hill side soaking in the warm sun rays and stuffing our faces with blueberries. On the way back to the boat we pulled our crab traps, sadly no crabs. We only set the Dungeness traps, so maybe our big tanner trap would have caught something, maybe next time.

This morning we woke before daylight broke across the sky and weighed anchor to get underway. The current in the Unalga Pass was ripping 3 or 4 knots to pop us out of the Bearing Sea into the Pacific Ocean. We really hoped for more wind, but sadly we have been motoring all day. The sun has shown so brightly the cockpit has been 75 degrees and Marj wished she would have brought her shorts to Alaska, haha. We started an audio book after several hours of delightful conversation.

A couple of weeks ago when we were in Dutch Harbor we took a fish skinning class, so we had been saving our halibut and cod skins to preserve them. A preserved fish skin is strong and can be used to make wallets, coin purses, picture frames, etc. for fun. We weren’t sure if we were going to be making stops before reaching Sand Point, so while we had lots of dock water we cleaned our skins and prepared them for drying. Today once out of the channel Sara hung the skins in the cockpit and later in the afternoon our audio book had not fully gripped us we started stretching the halibut and cod skins drying on the line.

Cheers,
Wade and Sara
