We woke this morning to our new 20 lb teak Marquesan Bowl from Ua Huka flying across the room, fortunately, the salon cushions also went flying and protected the crew, boat, and bowl, from any damage. We have been excited to have the increase in wind and to finally be sailing wind angles that are generally more comfortable; however, with the wind increase came the swell and wave increase. Our wave height has increased from 3 feet to 12 feet. We have pulled in sails so that the 20 knot average winds do not over power the boat. We decided that pointing higher into the wind would help us from rolling off the large waves and getting sea spray in the cockpit. Each of the adjustments forced us to slow down today, when all we want to do is get pier side. We also started to reconsidering stopping in Hilo and just head to Honolulu. Generally, it isn’t the wind speed, but the wave height that causes discomfort.
Today has been a sad day for the flying fish. So many have flown out of the water and on the boat. We do not dare try to rescue any of them on the forward deck because of sea state, but the ones that splash up in the cockpit we returned them to the sea. We can only assume in a few days the boat might be a bit fish stinky.
Cheers,
Wade and Sara
