Wide Bay

Wide Bay is truly a blow hole. As we approached Wide Bay around 9 or 10 am there was no wind, literally no wind, glass calm water, and not a ripple anywhere indicating there was wind. The temperature read 60 degrees, and not only did we have the scenic rugged mountains, but a giant hanging glacier atop a mountain. As we neared Hartman Island pass Dall Porpoises danced in the wake of our bow. Moving swiftly underwater and coming up shortly to expel and capture a breathe of air.

Within one mile of Wide Bay everything started to change and the wind became 7 knots. The wind increased further over a few hours and we now have white caps in the bay. Wind funneling from Bristol Bay near the Bearing Sea is passing through the mountains and compressing causing our anchorage to be bumpy. This did not stop us from going to shore and taking a little stroll across the beach. There is a long spit protecting us from the head of the bay and two hanging glaciers at the head of the bay.

Cheers,
Sara and Wade
