We have a relatively good weather situation so this afternoon we left Sand Point. It is however a little spooky because we are inside a strong low pressure system. Not that we are in anything like a hurricane, but similar to being in the eye of a hurricane, we are not experiencing much wind. Yet further from the center of the low the winds are 30 to 50 knots. This low is suppose to be generally stationary so we decided to sail, but we also know there are many fjords and bays in which to pull in if things should change. In addition, we expect to receive Wade’s mom on September 9th, so we need to keep on moving along towards Kodiak Island.
On our way out of the Sand Point area, we pulled our crab trap, which had 12 starfish in and on the trap, and also one very nice size octopus. We tossed the starfish back in the ocean and we are pressure cooking and canning the octopus. We learned that halibut like herring and octopus so we snipped the smaller part of the tentacles for halibut bait. Also, we don’t have much for freezer space because one of the local fishermen traded us king salmon for tuna.
An interesting quote we heard today from a sailboat called Nomad who has guests on their boat is as follows:
When hosting on a cruising boat make sure to tell your visitors you may choose a location or you may choose the date but you cannot choose both. ~ SV Nomad
How true it is that unknown weather and the treasures of unknown people and places to experience can make a sailors/cruisers’ course and timing fairly unpredictable. Definite plans just do not exist quite the same at sea.
It is a beautiful day at sea as we watch the shore side of continuous mountains and cliffs pass by.
Cheers,
Wade and Sara
