Searching For Bears

Today we crossed the 60 mile channel from Kodiak Island to the Alaska Peninsula and anchored in Geographic Harbor. This location is reputably “THE” place to go for viewing Alaskan Brown Bears and one of the most photographed spots in Alaska. Not only are there many bears, but people watch the bears fishing for salmon at a distance of 30 to 50 feet. One bear was sighted by Sara while nearing our place of anchoring. Tomorrow we will see for ourselves the bear situation up-close as it is raining a bit too hard this evening to check out the bears. At least this is what Wade’s mother, Marjorie, said regarding the rain and it is her birthday as well, so we are staying on the boat the last couple hours before dark (possibly prime bear feeding time?) Tonight we enjoy the fabulous triple layer German Chocolate birthday cake that Sara baked this morning for Marj. We are short a few candles yet Marj claims she is now 29. And as a precursor to cake and birthday singing, Sara is preparing oysters that we gathered in Penrhyn Atoll of the Cook Islands – Yummy. It was a pretty much flat calm today while sailing across the channel, so it was great conditions for baking and Wade also began work of installing the new Raymarine Axiom chart-plotter while underway. Marj played DJ and selected songs to be played from our NAS throughout the afternoon. We all watched the otters and seals pass by; we must have seen near a hundred sea otters today.

Cheers,
Wade and Sara
