Wade and Sara Happy New Year 2017

Happy New Year 2017!

We are ringing in the New Year in Pape’ete Tahiti, and New Years Day with a new sail.  The last couple of days we have been busy getting food, fuel, taking down Christmas lights, raising the dingy, cleaning the boat bottom, doing laundry and it goes on and on.  Our most annoying task is taking care of our new house guests.

BUGS have taken up residence in King Neptune’s Garden and are eating the leaves. We think they could be spider mites but they are only eating the mint and peppers.  We felt so sad dusting our non-chemical garden with Seven dust, but we feared the organic dust wouldn’t work. Not only are the plants fighting the bugs but they are battling the rain.

All of our plants have stem rot. We thought the rot was caused by the garden overflowing occasionally and not drying out.  Lately we haven’t had as many problems with root breakage and the garden has drained flawlessly so no overflowing. Sara had taken cuttings of the basil suffering from stem rot, the plant took root in water, then she replanted it back into King Neptune’s Garden, and yesterday we saw stem rot around all of the new basil.  We’re trying to figure out if this is a design flaw, a hydroponic problem, or French Polynesian problem.  The rain has been pretty intense and we’re wondering if the pots are filling up from the rain and not drying out because of the high humidity. We’ll keep you posted on the experiment and hopefully the New Year will be better fortune for King Neptune’s Garden.

Cheers!
