Beautiful Day

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day, well, that isn’t exactly true as we wish we had some wind, but beggers can’t be choosers. The outside temperature not in the sun is around 65 degrees but in the sun is closer to 70 to 75, even 80 degrees in the cockpit within the enclosure. The sky has been clear for two days, the sun is shinning and sparkling on the glassy water. We are motoring along at around 6 to 6.5 knots with the occasional slow up from currents.

Because the wind is so light we are pushing on to make Wide Bay with 100 miles to go. Wide Bay is locally known as a blow hole. Winds power down the bay in almost any weather condition making it a challenging anchorage, but our thoughts are if there is no wind then how can wind compress between mountains and williwaw. We feel we are lucky we have the weather to explore this new area.

Wade’s Caribou roast, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and gravy turned into a most excellent and hardy stew for leftovers today.

We have all been keeping busy with books and little projects. Both Wade and Sara prepared the fish skins we caught from Foxhole Inlet for drying. We used the new skills we learned in Dutch Harbor from our fish skinning class to flesh the skin and scales. All but one of the Black Rockfish and the Lingcod we removed the scales so we can experiment and see what happens when the fish skin dries with scales on. For each of the fish skins we rubbed Dawn detergent soap and vegetable oil (the oil conditions the skin), let them sit for 30 minutes (actually an hour because we forgot about them), and rinsed the soap and oil off. We haven’t turned on the watermaker so we are trying to conserve water, but trying to get the soap off the fish skin takes water. Thankfully we have not gone through a single water tank after leaving Sand Point so we will be fine with water. The fish skins are now drying in the sunny cockpit. Who knows what we’ll make?!

Cheers,
Sara and Wade
