Yes the wind is increasing, the temperature is dropping, and the rainy to sunny day ratio is 3 to 1, respectively. Today is a misty day but the weather forecast looks good, so we are off to cruise around Kodiak another month. Marj had a safe flight home and we stayed in town to endure a mighty wind. Our highest wind instrument reading was 49.5 knots but the wind stayed a consistent 35 to 45 for a couple days.
Our boat is not insulated, so our new worst enemy is condensation! Just imagine a nice hot day and a cold beverage of your choice in hand. The outside of the beverage condensate little drips of water. We have the same issue except we are the hot day inside the boat and the cold beverage is the lowering outside temperatures, so the hull sweats and drying out our bed has become a daily chore.
We researched online the best ways to insulate, but really everything comes down to time and money. We could begin an expensive and timely project to insulate the boat or we could put the boat up and call this the end of our cruising season this year. Brilliantly, Wade decided to use the same insulation he used in our built-in freezer, Dow insulation foam board, to insulate our bed and closets. We had success with the closets but the bed we still have to lift to dry each day. Sara used the aluminum bubble wrap insulation to protect the book shelf mounted on the wall. We had great help from Russ at Spenard Builders Supply to procure the 2 x 8 feet boards, otherwise, we would have had a comical bicycling trip through town on a windy day.
As we were leaving today our laptop monitor decided to act up. In case of an emergency we use Sara’s Macbook partitioned for Windows to access our Sailmail, but her laptop does not like the voltage from the SSB modem. We use Sailmail for our email underway and most importantly to retrieve weather. LA to the rescue, she drove Sara to a few junk stores and Walmart were we found cords to connect our HP laptop to our TV; however, to our dismay they are not working. Crossing our fingers we do not have any bad blows come in, Sara’s laptop holds up, and we are in an anchorage that we can here weather over VHF. We are very much are ready to get off the pier and stop boat projects, haha.
Cheers,
Wade and Sara
