Sailing Hawaii to Alaska

The day has finally arrived! About time too! We probably could have left last week because the weather was good for sailing to Dutch Harbor, but we are happy we stayed to finish our projects. You bet we played Johnny Horton North to Alaska as we left the harbor.

We finished enclosing King Neptune’s Garden and the cockpit. To prepare for possible challenging weather we took down 8 of 12 solar panels which reduces or power input from 5,200 to 1,740 watts. Not only did the solar come down but surf and paddle boards, spear guns, fishing nets and other stuff stored on top of the dodger and bimini. Where did we put all of this stuff? Great question, haha, we filled our salon with solar panels and the forward bed with all of the extra stuff. We are happy we have a two bedroom because the aft bedroom is completely clear and should be much more comfortable to sleep in for sea motion.
We balanced our boat to counter all of the starboard weight by filling our port water tanks.

We thought we were going to leave yesterday, but during a last minute rig check we identified our lead block to our jib furling line had a chip which caused abrasion to our furling line. We biked one last time to West Marine to get new line and thankfully we had a spare lead block. We were so tired so we decided to leave this morning.

Our tentative plan is to sail from Honolulu to Dutch Harbor, but if at anytime the weather gets too challenging we’ll head for easier destinations. We have recognized that we are leaving late in the season but this is the perfect time to sail to our destination.

As we were passing the airport we gave our fishing tiki a kiss and sure enough a small mahi mahi hit the line. The little mahi was not hurt or bleeding it just had a new lip piercing so we gave it back to the ocean to get bigger.

See details below to play Math Be Hard For Sailor’s Alaska. We’ll probably be out of cell phone signal range for tomorrow’s position, so Noon Reports will come from our SSB via Sailmail.

Prayers to those impacted by the Honolulu Marco Polo building fire.

Cheers,
Wade and Sara
